Teachers from Novosibirsk are raising the alarm: schoolchildren forgot how to hand-write. Good handwriting becomes rarer year by year. Psychologists suggest that having lost the ability to write down beautifully the received information, schoolchildren lose the ability to remember it as well. Moreover, a lack of writing skills can dangerously affect their mental health.
The whole world celebrated National Handwriting Day on January 23rd. The date was suggested by the Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association (WIMA) in 1977, back in the days when the era of computers was at its dawn causing the fade-away of the handwriting culture (together with typewriters).
A master class by Apollinaria Mishina, a young calligraphy artist from Saint-Petersburg, was held at the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy last Sunday, on January 26th.

Once an old folk’s hobby, the art of Chinese calligraphy is growing in popularity among the younger generation. The large number of participants, particularly primary and secondary school students, at the recent calligraphy competition organized by the Miri Chinese Calligraphy and Cultural Society, spoke of the escalating popularity among the Chinese community here.
The Window to the Sky exhibition is to be opened in the National museum of Republic Bashkortostan on January 13th, where twenty five artworks executed by Ali Ganji for Al Ikhlas Mosque during his visit to Ufa will be showcased. The 17th Annual National Contest in Mongolian Traditional Calligraphy was held in Ulan Bator. The contest is organized by the Khumuun Bichig newspaper published by Montsame News Agency. Over a thousand people from the capital and nineteen aimaks of the country participated in the contest.

At all times calligraphy in China has been considered a true art, a refined form of painting. Contemporary sculptor Zheng Lu takes hieroglyphs as a basis of his artworks. “Lace of hieroglyphs” executed from stainless steel licks the figures into original shape and meanwhile fills these sculptures with some extra sense.
Iraqi calligrapher Hamid Al Saady has created a miniature artwork dedicated to the Emir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on the occasion of Qatar’s National Day. Al Saady has inscribed on a grain of rice the verse “Tamim is a bouquet of flowers and the scent is Qatari.”

The Tatar Shamail of the 19th-20th centuries’ exhibition was opened at the Centre of National Arts in Tashkent on December 17th. According to the Turkiston-press Non-state News Agency report, shamail, the Old Tatar language is similar to the Uzbek language (Chagatai) and still have numerous lexical and phraseological borrowings taken from it.

The Islamic Book Binding Traditions. Ornamentations and Inscriptions exhibition was opened in Berlin on December 13th. Samples of books from different ages showcased in the exhibition represent the variety of bookbinding design. This fact allows visitors to follow the temporal and regional style development and its relation to other types of Islamic art.
A chosen Chinese hieroglyph was announced in Japan to symbolize the outgoing year. This event is held annually and provokes huge interest among the islanders. This year, they have sent more than 170000 offers.
Calligraphy, beautiful handwriting in Greek, is perceived as a skill of beautiful and legible handwriting and is considered to be a form of arts in Asian and other cultures. About two thousand students and schoolchildren of the Primorye have been competing in the art of calligraphy during the month.
Calligraphy is a kind of music not for the ears, but for the eyes.
