Japan is concerned with the preservation of "intangible cultural assets"

On February 5, the Government of Japan adopted a bill on creating a registration system for intangible cultural heritage (including folklore).

The bill, if passed, would help to better protect and preserve the culture of Japan.

The bill revising the law on the protection of cultural heritage, if approved by the National Diet of Japan at the current session, is expected to enter into force by the end of March 2022.

Under the new system, intangible cultural heritage that is not currently identified by the government as an important cultural object will be registered if it requires intensive measures relating to its preservation and usage.

Activist groups preserving the registered heritage would be eligible for government financial assistance and consultations.

According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the heritage qualifying for registration under the new system includes calligraphy, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, food culture, methods of making sake and some local dishes, as well as local festivals.
