Founded on May 18, 2017, the International Alliance of the Museums of the Silk Road currently includes 158 museums, including 111 Chinese and 47 international facilities (from Russia, Germany, the UK, Italy, the U.S. etc.). The Alliance was jointly initiated by the Special Committee of Museums of the Silk Road of the Chinese Museums Association (69 member units), the International Association for the Study of Silk Road Textiles (28 member units), the International Friendly Alliance of Museums of the Silk Road (54 member units), in addition to two more international museums from Pakistan and Tanzania.
One of the key Alliance’s goals is organization of themed exhibitions in the states along the Silk Road, information sharing, conferences and seminars, museum talent cultivation, and the aid to expand the international cooperation between museums in the countries and regions along the Silk Road. No less focus is given to strengthening and expanding contacts between the museums, and associated institutions and organizations. The main objective of the Alliance’s activities is to raise public awareness about the cultural cooperation of the countries, and to boost the connections between the Silk Road nations. To achieve the above, the International Alliance of the Museums of the Silk Road launched its official website in 2018.
“Strengthening the international exchange and cooperation in museum affairs is the common goal of the states and international organizations of the Silk Road,” noted Mr. Guan Qiang, the Deputy Chairman of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage in China. “I hope, the 1st congress of the International Alliance of the Museums of the Silk Road will achieve positive results in regard to exhibition management and staff training, and will contribute to develop archaeology and cultural industry.”
