Gemang Jampal takes Tibetan calligraphy further

At the heart of Tibetan culture is Tibetan calligraphy. It serves not only as a historical record but a vehicile that has helped with the preservation of Buddhism over a millennia. Now a Tibetan calligraphy artist is putting 35 years of his best works on display in an exhibition at the Tibet Museum.

These 119 pieces of work on display are fruit of labour of Tibetan calligrapher Gemang Jampal. He has pioneered three new writing styles based on the 27 existing Tibetan styles.

The centerpiece of the exhibition is this giant Tibetan calligraphy scroll, which became a Guinness World Record holder of the world's longest scroll featuring the most font styles in August 2013. It took the artist two years to complete and is being shown alongside another classic long scroll by Jampal.

"I've learned about Tibetan calligraphy in school. But I'm still very impressed seeing them up close and in person. The Tibetan calligraphy is so complex. Seeing them here makes me appreciate them so much more," said Zou Hongwei, student. Gemang Jampal's calligraphy are characterized by smooth and refined strokes and constantly morphying styles. The works range from auspicious blessings and the six syllable mantra, to peace wishes and letters to friends.

"My works are true to the form of Tibetan characters, but in terms of the style, I try to evoke a feeling of floating cloud or flowing water. It's very pleasant for the viewers," said Gemang Jampal, calligrapher.

"I feel overwhelmed with joy by his work. In a sacred place like Tibetan plateau, I can't help but feel this love for the land and such a pristine state of mind elicited through his work," said Li Muxi, calligraphy enthusiast. Listed as a national intangible heritage, the exhibition at the Tibet Museum is the largest and longest running of its kind on Tibetan calligraphy.

Jampal's work is a fusion of his understanding of Tibetan Buddhism and modern aesthetics. "It's a great opportunity for me to show my works here at the Tibet museum. It's an honor to be able to showcase my best works here and show the world what a profound art Tibetan calligraphy is," he said. This exhibition is the second solo exhibition by Jampal, following extensive requests by fans and calligraphy enthusiasts.
