Calligraphy Boom in Ukraine

The art of calligraphy is actively developing in the former USSR. For Asian countries this trend is not a novelty, but the increased interest in calligraphy, for example, in Ukraine is worthy of note.

Ruthenia, a Ukrainian festival of calligraphy and typography will be held on November 12-14 in Kiev for the second time already. The venue remains the Kiev State Institute of Decorative and Applied Arts and Design named after M. Boychuk.

According to organizers the main purpose is calligraphy interest revival in Ukraine and promoting a culture of Ukrainian writing. Participants will gather together from all over Ukraine – calligraphers, type designers, and students of art institutions among them.

The International Exhibition of Calligraphy is encouraged to be followed by such events in Russia and abroad demonstrating the growing demand for this art.

By the way, four well-known Ukrainian calligraphers are collaborating with the International Exhibition of Calligraphy project, namely Vasil Chebanik (calligrapher, fellow of the Union of Artists of Ukraine, honored art worker of Ukraine, professor at the National Academy of Fine arts and Architecture), Vitaly Mitchenko (calligrapher artist, assistant professor to the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture, member of the Union of Artists of Ukraine), Yaroslav Kutz (designer, graphic artist, associate of the Ukrainian Academy of Printing) and a young calligrapher Aleksei Chekal (art director of a graphic design studio, teacher at the Kharkov State Academy of Design and Art).
