The House of Artists in Omsk has opened Andrey MASHANOV’s personal exhibition named “The Magic of a Sign,” which celebrates the artist’s 60th birthday.
The anniversary exhibition features more than a hundred artworks from various periods, including the pages for future books “A Bouquet for My Darling” and “The Book of Angels,” as well as the already published “Lubinsky Avenue.”
Lately MASHANOV has been into what is called the original or the artist’s book – unique and limited publications with only a few copies printed, entirely hand-made. In this particular case this means etchings and calligraphy.
Some of the etchings made for “Lubinsky Avenue” can be also seen in AR illuminated by bright fireworks or accompanied by birds or zeppelins.
Angels are MASHANOV’s favourite topic, and he’s equally passionate when talking of the new book:
“The original etchings were made back in 2009, with “The Light Angel” being the most renowned one. Then the series started to grow, and when it reached 12, I made a calendar with angels and calligraphy inscriptions of months and days. Since the series has been keeping on growing, I came up with the idea to issue a book with texts focusing on angels. Unfortunately, I struggle to finish it because at my exhibitions people always ask me if I can sell something. If they like it, they buy it, And I have to give it away, this is why the whole series can’t come together. But I hope it will eventually.”
Keeping up with the times, Andrey MASHANOV borrows the texts for his books online. Among the quotes of famous people or interesting user comments, his own thoughts can also be found.
This comprehensive and exciting exhibition filled with angel images opened shortly before the New Year and Christmas for a reason. Its holiday vibe is here to stay until the Twelfth Day, January 19.
