A new display opened to the public in the Novgorod Museum-Reserve — the Museum of Writing

On May 25, a new museum was opened in the Likhudovsky Building of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve to celebrate the Day of Slavic Writing and Culture — the Museum of Writing. Alla Manilova, State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation sent a congratulation message to the organizers and guests of the opening ceremony.

"Novgorod made a unique contribution to the spread of writing in Ancient Russia, the complex of Novgorod birch bark manuscripts is of outstanding importance for Russian and world history," Alla Manilova wrote to the guests of the ceremony.

The State Secretary and Deputy Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation stressed the importance of the new museum to the cultural life of the country.

"The Museum of Writing will present the history of Ancient Russian books, tell the story of printing in Russia and the heritage of the Likhud brothers", she wrote.

The exhibition features about two hundred items from the collections of the Novgorod Museum-Reserve, copies of exhibits from the collections of the State Historical Museum, the Russian National Library, and the Russian State Library.

The artifacts tell about the origin and spread of writing and literature in Veliky Novgorod, the largest center of chronicles, education, and literacy of Ancient Russia.

The museum also presents household items and handicrafts with inscriptions by ancient Novgorodians, as well as ancient coins, seals, stone crosses, and calligraphy. A separate exhibition hall is dedicated to birch bark manuscripts, a unique phenomenon of Medieval Russian writing. The museum exhibits the documents that preserve the history of the Likhud Brothers School, ancient handwritten and printed books. Another part of the exhibition tells stories of chroniclers, calligraphers, scribes, translators, artists, and keepers of written heritage.

Films, animated drawing books, and interactive games were created for the exhibition. Museum uses multimedia and various activities to help visitors learn the history of the alphabet, the counting systems of ancient Novgorodians, and read the texts of the birch bark manuscripts and ancient codices.

The museum was opened as part of the project of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation

"Preservation and Use of Cultural Heritage in Russia". The program has been implemented by the St. Petersburg Foundation for Investment Projects since 2011.
