An event of no less than a global scale has launched in Sokolniki Park – the 6th International Exhibition of Calligraphy has opened in a snow-white exhibit hall of 1500 sqm on Festivalnaya Square. The opening ceremony featured some well-known artists from Russia and abroad, including Yuri Koverdyaev, Vitaly Shapovalov, Kirill Tarkhanov, Kim Jong Chil, Lo Lei and many more. The guest of honour, the official calligrapher of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and an outstanding heraldry and illumination expert from the UK, Timothy Noad, stood with a welcome speech and presented his Salamander work to the originator of the International Exhibition of Calligraphy project, Alexey Shaburov.
Participants of the opening ceremony saw a presentation by Alexey Shaburov, which introduced to them the history of the project and its invaluable exhibits, as well as enjoyed welcome speeches from Yuri Bobryshev, the major of Novgorod, where the 2nd International Exhibition of Calligraphy was held in 2010, and also from some calligraphers who couldn't make it to the event – Donald Jackson and Yuri Arutsev.
To close, a Korean calligrapher and participant of the International Exhibition of Calligraphy, Kim Jong Chil, held a calligraphy performance for the guests.
So far the first workshop about Chinese calligraphy, namely the History of Development and Styles of Chinese Calligraphy, has been held by Lo Lei from Saint-Petersburg. The guests may expect the most entertaining talks and workshops over the days to come.
We look forward to seeing you at Festivalnaya Square in Sokolniki Park between September 1 and 10!
