10th Anniversary of the Unique Handwritten Constitution of the Russian Federation

On December 12, 2018, Russia celebrated 25 years since the adoption of its Basic Law, the Constitution of the Russian Federation. It was adopted by national referendum on December 12, 1993. The act has the highest legal force, which establishes the fundamental elements of the constitutional system of the Russian Federation, the state system, the formation of representative, executive, judicial bodies, and the system of local self-government, human and civil rights and freedoms, as well as constitutional amendments and the revision of the Constitution.

This year also marks another anniversary — 10 years since the creation of a unique handwritten Constitution of the Russian Federation. Back in 2008, a team of calligraphy artists led by an outstanding master Pyotr Chobitko worked hard for five months to produce the piece. The idea of creating a handwritten version of the Russian Constitution emerged in the very moment when the national consciousness woke up together with the understanding how great and worthy of respect Russia is in every aspect, including its principal document, the Constitution. The fact that this project came to life testifies how significant and well-timed it was.

In the meantime, the work on yet another copy of the handwritten constitution has already began. In 2014, the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy commissioned Yuri Koverdyaev, a graphic artist and a member of the Artists Trade Union of Russia, to produce an update for the project of the Russian Constitution as amended in 2014. We are waiting for the completion of the work with bated breath. As a result, the world will acquire a unique masterpiece exemplary for future generations, a masterpiece to draw inspiration from for many years to come.
