Amedeo Modigliani

(1884-1920)

Italian artist, one of the most famous artists of the end of the XIXth – beginning of the XXth century, graphic representative of expressionism. He belonged to the Paris School. The best manifestation of his talent was in the portrait genre.

Pablo Picasso

(1881-1973)

Spanish artist, sculptor, graphic artist, ceramist and designer. Founder of cubism (jointly with Georges Braque), in which a three-plane object was originally painted as a number of combined planes. Pablo Picasso has a lot of imitators and produced exclusive influence on development of art in the XXth century.

Kazimir Severinovich Malevich

(1878-1935)

Soviet and Russian avant-garde artist, one of founders of suprematism – one of directions of abstract art. Theorist of arts and philosopher. From 1923 to 1927 – Director of the Leningrad State Institute of Art Culture. Founder of avant-garde association UNOVIS (Asserters of New Art).

Vasily Ivanovich Surikov

(1848-1916)

Great Russian painter, master of large-scale historical canvas. He participated in painting of choirs of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow. In 1881 he joined the Peredvizhniki movement. Full member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1893).

Viktor Mikhailovich Vasnetsov

(1848-1926)

Outstanding Russian artist, master of historical and folk paintings. He started exhibit his paintings in 1869, first in expositions of the Academy of Arts, then – in the Peredvizhniki exhibitions. In 1893 he became a full member of the Academy of Arts, after 1905 he joined the Union of Russian People. Brother of artist A.M. Vasnetsov.

Paul Gauguin

(1848-1903)

French painter, one of main representatives of post-impressionism, his early period of work was connected with impressionism. He was also engaged in sculpture, ceramics and graphics.

Ilya Yefimovich Repin

(1844-1930)

Russian artist, painter, master of portraits as well as historical and everyday-life scenes. In 1893 he became a full member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. In 1894-1907 he was a professor-head of a workshop in the Academy of Arts. He was also a memoirist and author of a number of essays collected in memoir book Remote and Near.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir

(1841-1919)

French painter, graphic artist and sculptor. One of leading representatives of impressionism. He was one of organizers of the exhibition known in history as the first impressionist exhibition. In 1900, he was awarded the Legion of Honor, and in 1911 – officer of the Legion of Honor.

Russian landscape painter, artist, draftsman and printmaker. Academician (1865), professor (1873), head of landscape workshop (1894-1895) of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. Founder and member of the Peredvizhniki movement. Master of lithography and etching. Outstanding landscape master, he inherently combines romanticism and realism features in his paintings and graphics.

Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky

(1817-1900)

Worldwide famous Russian seascape painter, collector. Brother of Armenian historian, priest Gabriel Aivazovsky. The Feodosia Art Gallery founded by the painter and named after him nowadays, contains the best collection of works of the great master.

Alexander Andreyevich Ivanov

(1806—1858)

Russian artist, master of historical painting, representative of academism. Author of grandiose canvas The Appearance of Christ before the People which he painted for 20 years. Works of the painter are exhibited in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow and Russian Museum in St. Petersburg.
