Written As Blessed exhibition in Andrei Rublev Museum

On June 29 the Andrei Rublev Central Museum of Old Russian Culture and Art will open an exhibition featuring a magnificent artefact of the Old Russian booklore – The Ladder manuscript, originally written by Saint John Sinaites, created in the Monastery of Joseph of Volokolamsk scriptorium by one of the founder’s companion, Pherapont the monk (Obukhov). This essay telling of monastic labour was a particularly popular read among the monks, and the monastery library used to keep several copies of it created in subsequent years.

The exhibition will sum up the first stage of the manuscript restoration process, giving the visitors a unique chance to see each and every page individually. Calligraphy in the book is complemented by elegant ornamental headpieces that date back to the best examples of Moscow book industry in the 15th and early 16th centuries. Decorative elements of the other Volokolamsk manuscripts, in particular the Byzantine book covers, which were traditionally used in the monastery scriptorium, will enable to see the artefact in the book culture context of its era.
