The Astrakhan Museum of History hosts the projects for children «Write and read», «Calligraphy: from penmanship to art» and «The decorative capital letter in the history of books and book decoration».
The last project introduces the concept of the «decorative capital letter» to the young visitors of the museum. They are told what is the «break line», how the pages of the ancient manuscript books were decorated and how the initial capital letters were drawn. The schoolchildren can see the books with colored and decorated capital letters.
The project includes the calligraphy practical lessons. At first, the children paint the suggested patterns of different capital letters and enthusiastically choose a set of colors. The second stage is more difficult: the children have to draw and decorate a capital letter by themselves.
When organizing the project, the museum team members were holding the idea that «in our age we are less likely to create something with your hands. The list of the skills we may lose includes writing, and it is writing that develops our spatial and plastic thinking.»
