Workshops “Writing Traditions of Veliky Novgorod”

On April 17 at 12.00 and 16.00 the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy will hold two workshops themed “Writing Traditions of Veliky Novgorod” by Mikhail Danilov, calligraphy artist and teacher and head of the Kalamos calligraphy studio from Veliky Novgorod. Mikhail Danilov believes that everyone can master calligraphy. In his works alongside with modern writing techniques Mikhail uses traditional teaching methods used in medieval times in Novgorod schools.

Workshop subjects:

12.00 – 13.30 “Medieval schools in Veliky Novgorod: The tradition of writing on cerae*”

Have you ever scribed on wax tablets? Mikhail will provide you with an opportunity to try the role of Onfim of Novgorod, a boy who lived in Veliky Novgorod in the 13th century, and to make inscriptions on wax tablets following the traditions of Novgorod writing.

*Cerae is a rectangular wooden tablet with a hollowed space filled with wax. Inscriptions are made with a sharpened wooden stick called stylus.

16.00 – 17.30 “Parochial schools of old Novgorod: cursive scripts”

his workshop is for those who are interested in trying Old Russian cursive writing technique and learning the specific features of “civic” cursive writing of the 18th century.

You will have a chance to work with a sharp brush and ink imitating the style of 18th-century penmen.
