Workshop: Japanese calligraphy and Ikebana

On April, 10 at 02.00 pm the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy will hold a workshop on Japanese calligraphy and the art or Ikebana.

Renowned Japanese masters Takefusa Sashida and Shoko Hirose will unveil the secrets of the fine arts of the Land of the Rising Sun: Japanese calligraphy and the art of flower arranging, ikebana.

In Japan calligraphy is one of the main most popular fine arts. The Japanese hieroglyph beginning its history in the 2nd century BC is defined by a combination of visual aesthetics, harmony and a philosophical meaning. In Japanese calligraphy a symbol carried out by a master becomes a piece of art filled with the author’s emotional charge, the external energy, the power of the brush stroke. The language of Japanese calligraphy is the body language, a dance.

Ikebana is a classic Japanese art tracing its history back to the 6th century AD. The origin of this art of flower arranging lies with the Buddhist rituals of laying flowers at Buddha’s altar.

Attendees of the workshop will learn about the meaning and the power of the hieroglyph, try their hand at the ancient art of Ikebana and become participants of a calligraphy performance.
