Julia Vance is a calligrapher and a sculptor. For a long period of her life, she has lived and worked in Norway. Now she lives in Italy, in small a Tuscan village of Pietrasanta. It is the very place where people have been quarrying marble necessary for Julia’s work for the last three millennia.
In her letters-sculptures, calligraphy magically acquires material form. Julia works mainly with marble and bronze. Thanks to the master’s oeuvres we are able to touch letters with our own hands. As Julia puts it, “My sculptures help me learn the meaning of different words, each of them often encapsulating a story of its own.”
Calligraphy — the written beauty of feelings.
