Top Korean calligrapher, Professor Kim Byung-ki visited Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy

On October 8, 2019, Alexey Shaburov gave a tour of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy to a renowned Korean scholar and calligraphy artist, Professor Kim Byung-Ki, who saw the unique examples of Slavonic, European, Hebrew, Arabic, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean writing, handmade books issued by “Rare Books from Saint Petersburg” publishing house, as well as some rare handwritten editions, including the Constitution of the Russian Federation.

During the tour, the artist recognized handwriting of his student, a globally renowned calligraphy artist Kim Jong Chil, who held a personal exhibition in the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy in 2016 to display his most famous masterpieces. Three artworks were donated to the museum collection.

“You have collected the artworks created by renowned calligraphy artists from all over the globe. Thanks to your effort, the art of calligraphy has been recognized on the government level. You have done a truly great job,” Kim Byung-ki said to emphasize the high level of the showcased artworks, when talking to Alexey Shaburov. He also noted that next year Russia and the Republic of Korea celebrate the 30th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties, which is a great cause to hold an exhibition in Moscow to feature the best Korean and Russian calligraphers. “I have been organizing similar events for twenty years now, I also manage an international calligraphy biennial, and have established relations with many outstanding artists, so it would please me to cooperate with the Museum,” he added.

The calligraphy artist visited Moscow to open his personal exhibition, which is held in the Cultural Centre of the Republic of Korea between October 7 and November 7, 2019.

Kim Byung-ki has been actively promoting Korean calligraphy. At the opening ceremony, he gave a workshop and demonstrated his skills by writing “Hail peace and prosperity” on huge paper sheets in Chinese and Korean characters.
