The Power Station of Art presents Calligraphic time and space: Abstract Art in China

The Power Station of Art in Shanghai, China, presents the exhibition Calligraphic Time and Space: Abstract Art in China until 22nd November 2015.

The exhibition at the Power Station focuses on abstraction and its relationship with calligraphy with a contemporary point of view. It brings together 66 projects, and 174 works by 28 mainland Chinese artists. Visually, Chinese abstract art draws on the aesthetics of calligraphy; conceptually, it is based upon Daoist and Zen Buddhist thought. The aesthetics of calligraphy are related to the dynamism of writing with an ink brush, analysing the structure of the pictographic character and the composition of the work as a whole. Calligraphic abstraction focuses on fluency, consistency, and rhythms of the forms. Calligraphic Time and Space: Abstract Art in China seeks to be the basis of discussion on the possibilities of advancement of abstraction in China.

The Power Station of Art was established in 2012, and is the first state-run contemporary art museum in mainland China. The building itself is a former power plant, with the 42,000 square meters, and allows the public to engage with different schools of art and culture.
