The First Museum of Calligraphy in Russia Has Been Opened Today

Today Sokolniki Entertainment and Recreation Park has welcomed Russia’s first Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy. Its opening has been held in the context of the upcoming International Exhibition of Calligraphy, which will be opened on September 17th in St. Petersburg.

The exposition includes various exhibits related to the art of beautiful handwriting, featuring fine samples of Slavonic and European lettering, Russian and foreign books on calligraphy, limited editions of rare manuscripts, writing utensils of the past and present, elegant Hebrew calligraphy. The permanent exposition will include over eighty well-designed calligraphic works of art by the visual artists and their apprentices from Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Germany, France, Israel, Syria, USA, Japan, China.

According to the testimonials of the first visitors, warm atmosphere of the show provokes meditativeness. Every work has a profound aesthetic value and emits the positive energy of the Letter. No wonder the welcome addresses were so warm and friendly.

The floor was given to Pyotr Chobitko, President of the National Union of Calligraphers and Alexey Shaburov, Director of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy.

The opening ceremony was attended by Joseph Tavor, the First Secretary of the Embassy of Israel and representative of the Israeli Cultural Centre who presented the work of an illustrious Israeli calligrapher Avraham Borshevsky.

The event was covered by the most popular mass media. The framework of the Grand Opening included master classes from the most prominent calligraphers where everyone could see little masterpieces being born. Any museum would be proud to have each of these chefs d’oeuvre in its collection.
