“Nowadays all UN officials from Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations National to Resident Representatives of different states in the UN have started to learn both Chinese and calligraphy with gusto.” The Calligraphy And Painting Works Exhibition By The UN Officials took place at Sun Yat-sen University on August 3rd. According to He Yong, chief delegate for exchanges in the field of art, head of the UN Chinese language group, more and more officials at the UN have begun to be keen on Chinese calligraphy.
Chinese calligraphy is one of the most ancient and vital kinds of art in the world that has been officially entered onto UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists in September 2009.
As He Yong points out, Chinese, which is one of the six official U.N.O. languages, and Chinese calligraphy provoke huge interest thanks to the friendly exchanges widening between China and other countries in recent years. “The fact that Chinese calligraphy art is entering in to the U.N.O. highlights its big opportunity to be revealed to the world; calligraphy is like a representative essential of China, which has to become a new force to move the transmission and diffusion of the Chinese culture.”
Among the calligraphy works presented at the exhibition are: work by Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations National; thirty one art pieces by the organization’s officials; twenty four works by the masters from Yichang, a prefecture-level city located in western Hubei province, People's Republic of China.
As it turned out to be, the current exhibition is organized by the Board of Education of Hubei province and the U.N.O. Chinese language group.
