“The Aesthetic Unity of Chinese Calligraphy and Painting” talk by Vera Belozerova

Vera Belozerova, the Doctor of Art History, Professor of the Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies at the National Research University, the Higher School of Economics, gave a talk about the aesthetic unity of Chinese calligraphy and painting on September 22 between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM.

Belozerova characterized the aesthetic unity of Chinese calligraphy and painting through similar figurative elements (such as lines, marks or free background), unified requirements to their energetic content, and identical criteria for artistic quality. She also noted that Chinese calligraphy and painting of the 21st century consistently maintain the principles of traditional aesthetics, seamlessly combining them with stylistic innovations that reflect modern spiritual aspirations. Finishing her speech, she emphasized that both calligraphy and painting hold the great art and curative potential as they aim for aesthetic development of the character. This talk also wrapped up with a Q&A session.
