Rietumu Gallery presents the art of Japanese calligraphy

Rietumu Art Gallery opened its doors to present the Art Of Japanese calligraphy exhibition organized by Rietumu Bank together with the Japanese Embassy in Latvia. The exposition features twenty works executed by Sekisai Takeme.

The artist was born in 1943 in the Nagano’s prefecture. He learnt the art of calligraphy from such masters as Nanchio Seki, Otei Suzuki and Kintei Negishi. Sekisai Takeme is an expert of the Japanese Institute of Calligraphy, a member of the expert panel for the exhibition of calligraphy in Tokyo, and a member of the executive committee for the exhibition of Asian art, the Seshu International Arts Council and for the Peacekeeping Association of Artists.

Over his creative development the master was awarded with the All-Japanese Federation of Calligraphy award, and some artistic awards including the Art Maison and Global Arts. His masterpieces were showcased at a variety of exhibitions held in many different countries all across the world.

Besides Sekisai Takeme himself, the opening ceremony for Rietumu the art gallery gathered together: the Japanese Ambassador to Latvia Toshiyuki Taga, representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Culture of Latvia, as well as several artists and elite of Latvia.

«Such forms of art as painting and music are frequently called the world’s language. Everyone can read them. Calligraphy is based on written symbols which are harder to conceive. But the distinctive feature that calligraphy has lies in emotional and aesthetic enjoyment apart from the sense it brings. What is more, lately this traditional Japanese art attracted international attention,» the artist said at the opening of the exhibition.

The masterpieces of Japanese masters are on display at Rietumu Art Gallery (Vesetas Vesetas Street 7, Riga) until June 13th. The exhibition is open during the week from 9 am to 6 pm. The entrance is free of charge.
