In late June, DiaS art gallery (Irkutsk city, Russia) launched a solo exhibition of Andrey Mashanov, an honored artist of Russia, chairman of the Omsk branch of the Union of Russian Artists, and a participant of the International Exhibition of Calligraphy. The exhibition is titled “Calligraphy. Image and Word” and will run through August 30, 2018.
The exhibition consists of the artist’s recent highlights in various forms of the contemporary calligraphy art, such as lettering, the art of book, and fine and decorative arts, all in one place.
Andrey Mashanov’s “Old Russian masters” has been accorded wide recognition. The etching series is comprised of compositions depicting iconographic and evangelical scenes with images of Christian saints, icon painters, and unknown architects. By introducing biblical texts, the artist gave a new meaning and interpretation to the traditions of the Old Russian icon painting.
As he is developing the “word and image” technique, the artist turns to calligraphy as high art and shows beautiful calligraphy as part of an artistic image.
Calligraphy is a remedy and mental gymnastics.
