Presentation of the first and only handwritten copy of the Constitution of the Russian Federation

On September 11, 2008 at 12.00 noon the first and only handwritten copy of the modern Constitution of the Russian Federation was presented in the press-centre of PH AiF

This project is a result joint effort made by a team of calligraphers and editors lead by Pyotr Chobitko, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Union of Calligraphers.

The handwritten copy of the Constitution of the Russian Federation is an integral part of the International Exhibition of Calligraphy, a socially beneficial and educational forum scheduled for September 17th, to be launched in the Russian Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg.

At the press-conference

The press-conference was attended by:

• Aleksei Shalashov, Director of Contemporary Art and International Culture Relations Department under the RF Ministry of Culture;

• Pyotr Chobitko, Chairman of the Presidium of the National Union of Calligraphers;

• Alexey Shaburov, Director of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy;

• Nikolai Taranov , calligrapher, Doctor of Pedagogic Sciences, Candidate of Art History, Professor, member of the Union of Artists of Russia;

• Chen Wenfu, calligrapher, continuator of a great dynasty of Chinese calligraphers, member of the Chinese Scientific Union of Antithetical Couplets;

• Pyotr Suspitsyn, Editor-in-chief of the Rare Book PH, St. Petersburg;

• Aleksandr Kvasnikov, Deputy Director General of Sokolniki Museum-Educational Complex.

Each speaker concentrated on the fact that due the ideal zeal of the project authors the revival of writing traditions and calligraphy development in Russia is becoming real every day.

It was pointed out that the handwritten copy of Russia’s Basic Law, the brainchild of the National Union of Calligraphers, is destined to become an honorable symbol of Russia’s restoration; it is a hallmark event in the history of national statehood and national book publishing.

The elaborate and refined folio will be an exclusive exhibit and will occupy an honorable place in the exposition of International Exhibition of Calligraphy.
