The expedition for private museums of Russia visited a private museum “The House of Mayor”, which used to be home for Kostroma merchant Gennady Botnikov and his family between 1908 and 1914. For 14 years Botnikov continuously occupied the position of the city mayor. Under his supervision Kostroma set up the first city power plant, a fire station, a public library, and a selection of new educational facilities, at the same time essential house numbering and phone network, covering both banks of the Volga river too, were introduced too. Botnikov donated enormous amounts of his own funds to improve the city and meet citizens’ needs. Currently the museum serves as an example of the early 20th century city manor, with spacious halls and cosy apartments exhibiting typical furniture and dishware of that period, and long-forgotten household items.
