Read a painting in the truest sense of the word, and experience the word. A calligraphy exhibition “Line By Line” featuring Viktor Novikov, an exceptional artist from Sergiev Posad, opened in Leo Tolstoy central city library in Sevastopol.
Letters are the lead characters on these canvases. Today calligraphy is seen by many as well-forgotten past, yet Novikov believes that this is the handwriting of the era. He was unable to attend the exhibition in person but his brother, who is also engaged in this art, so unusual for the time, witnesses the event. He is also confident about the importance of handwriting for our generation.
VLADIMIR NOVIKOV, icon painter, graphic artist, and founder of “Trenoga” gallery: “Calligraphy is not simply writing, but the development of it. Calligraphy helps shape a fine handwriting among other things, but there is more. It forms a sense of proportion and beauty, an artistic perspective, a sense of style.”
The 20 pages featured in the exhibit include individual artworks as well as handwritten book masterpieces in Cyrillic and Latin. Round-bellied, cut, ornate and solidly composed letters. The artist reverently worked with each and every word. The script is illuminated, or according to a more actual interpretation, illustrated
ANNA GORENKOVA, manager of informational and educational centre “The Virtual Russian Museum”: “Contemporary calligraphy is one of the most rapidly growing areas that engages millions of people from all across the world. This knowledge can be helpful or just serve as a source of fascinating impressions. You can also see contemporary calligraphy on the exhibited original compositions.”
Consolidated as one educational project titled “Interaction,” the artworks will let the locals enjoy the handwriting of the era in Leo Tolstoy library. The event will run until May to help study the penmanship in details.
