The Global Handwriting Day is celebrated on January 23rd.
This day has been established to remind about the special character of the handwriting, the need to practice and uniqueness of each individual's handwriting. The celebration was initiated by the Writing Instrument Manufacturers Association (WIMA) that proclaimed the “handwriting” celebration to date on January 23rd.
This is the very day when one of prominent American statesmen was born – John Hancock, who was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence. His signature proved vast and loose, boosting the author’s prestige.
The history of handwriting development is measured in thousands of years. Some thoughts on connections between handwriting and spiritual world were expressed by Aristotle and some great Italian minds of the Renaissance era. In 1875 French abbot Jean-Hyppolite Michon was the first to introduce the term “graphology”, which today defines the area of knowledge regarding the handwriting and research methods for its connection with one’s mental health. A great contribution into the theory of graphology was also made by German philosopher and psychologist Ludwig Klages.
Today modern science distinguishes seven key characteristics of handwriting that help produce a profile – the size of the letters, its slope and shape, handwriting direction, weight intensity, nature of producing words and an overall assessment. Graphology experts assume there has to be a connection between specifics of one’s handwriting and personality traits as human brain “guides” the writer’s hand subconsciously. The same cerebration is used to explain changes in handwriting that accompany coming of age and personality changes.
