Emptiness in Black Solo is Anatoly Frenkel’s Penmanship Exhibition subtitle. This time the Perm artist, famous for his abstract oil paintings, will present his graphics. According to Marina Feldblume, owner of the 25/17 Gallery it will impart an air of exclusiveness and originality to her vernisage, «In general, graphics are rarely exhibited; however, these are no ordinary graphics. Firstly, it is large-scale: 1 m x 75 cm sheets. Secondly, it is the approach: classic graphics by black ink on white paper. However, Anatoly employs offset ink which conveys the shift from reality to abstraction through converging classic shapes.»
Anatoly Frenkel, a famous pedagogue, painter, and graphic artist explains that the works on display are «rather a demonstration of a way of thinking». «What we are dealing with here is the so-called ‘presence effect’. For me, working on the series is a special mode of existence.»
Visually, the graphics resemble contemporary Japanese calligraphy, hence some works are actually qualified as calligraphy, or, as the author himself puts it, «quasicalligraphy». The Penmanship Vernisage is scheduled to open on October 22nd. Entrance — free of charge. Gallery 25/17 (25, ulitsa Gorkogo) has revealed its plans to organize an exhibition by Armen Gasparyan, a Saint Petersburg artist.
Calligraphy is frozen poetry.
