On July 17, 2019, Director of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy Alexey Shaburov met with the Deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, and member of the State Duma Committee on Culture, Natalia Pilyus.
Shaburov acted as a tour guide himself, demonstrating the most valuable examples of calligraphy made by Russian and international artists. Being a cultural heritage preservation expert, Pilyus was excited to see the museum exhibit.
“Calligraphy is the most ancient art. When you hold handwritten books in your hands, the artist’s skill to depict a letter to make it an element in its own right, and to encourage you to treat the book more gently as a piece of art, is breath-taking. The exhibition impresses with the variety of opportunities to use letters not only as a part of the alphabet but as a piece of an artwork. Pen or brush skills help translate the author’s idea in compact or sophisticated manner in one case or another. When they say about calligraphy, one always thinks Chinese or Arabic script, and it’s important to see that the museum extensively features Russian calligraphy,” she noted.
Alexey Shaburov invited Natalia to attend two landmark events scheduled for September this year: the “Private Museums of Russia. Talents of Russia” exhibition, which opens on the 872nd anniversary of Moscow – on September 7, 2019, and the “Great Chinese Calligraphy and Painting” exhibition, a no less significant event designed to celebrate the 70th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties between Russia and China. The Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy organizes the events in partnership with the Association of Private Museums of Russia, and Sokolniki Exhibition and Convention Centre.
Summarizing, Natalia Pilyus emphasized that these projects require all sorts of support, and promised to share her impressions with her team. The said impressions resonated in the following feedback: “The Museum of Calligraphy is a unique collection, striking with its calibre and thought-through placement of information. It features the most friendly feel, exciting exhibits, and I’m happy that I could visit it on the 70th anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties between Russia and China.”
When there are no words left, the meaning is still preserved.
