Chinese calligraphy school opened in Saint-Petersburg

Calligraphy is an ancient symbol reflected art.

The Chinese calligraphy school has opened as a general platform to learn the art of Chinese writing.

The school is founded by Chinese calligraphy artist Luo Lei and artist, teacher and art expert from Saint-Petersburg Oksana Khukhrina.

A tandem of two creative thinkers gave birth to the educational project.

Luo Lei started calligraphy at 13 and studied under one of the most well known contemporary calligraphy artists – Yan Hong. Between 1988 and 1995 he taught calligraphy in China, and moved to Russia later in 1996. He spent many years to master Chinese calligraphy painstakingly learning and copying ancient artists, absorbing the long-standing historical patterns and creating his own unique style. Today Luo Lei’s works can be found in private collections in China and Russia and in the Hermitage’s Book as Art exhibit.

The school system is designed on the scaffolding basis. The students learn fine and consistent writing and master rules and principles of writing characters, study the most common words and expressions of Chinese vocabulary, and counting. Reference to the art legacy of Chinese artists is understandable – the whole of practical exercises will help master complex writing techniques in various styles, while an insight to the ancient poetry will serve as a magnificent vehicle to experience Chinese wisdom and culture.

The course is designed for senior high school and university students or adults in groups of 5 to 10. Initial enrolment has started this March. To enrol or learn more details please see
