The Kharkov artist Alexey Chekal presents his exhibition Letters and Sounds. He creates his works under the influence of music. The author says that the project’s idea appeared unexpectedly. It became the final point of the lectures on calligraphy which Alexey Chekal held in Kharkov.
«Unfortunately, in the post-Soviet period the art of calligraphy was a bit forgotten», believes Alexey. «But calligraphy is reviving. A beautifully written text has its aesthetic aspects; it can compete with a picture and be an interior object. In the computer age when a text can be typed in any font, a human hand can highlight the designer’s approach, individuality and emotions».
The exhibition features 18 works that visitors can not only look at but also ‘listen to’. Every work is accompanied by music.
The works were created under the influence of Alexey’s favorite music: compositions by Dirty Three, King Crimson, Yury Naumov, Egor Letov.
«Music is appropriate here because it helps to express emotions, increases the impact», thinks the author of the exhibition.
The texts forming the basis of the exhibition are mostly titles or fragments of musical compositions.
«Calligraphy is the „leaven“ for the graphical taste. It may be distant from the present but anyway it is very important for designers and people connected to the arts», states Alexey.
The exhibition is open until December 29th in the COME IN gallery (26, Danilevskogo st.). Admission is free.
