Calligraphy Exhibition of Taiwanese Buddhist Master Opens in Seoul

Buddhist Master Hsing Yun

A calligraphy exhibition featuring the work of Buddhist Master Hsing Yun of Taiwan opened Sunday in Seoul, South Korea after touring more than 10 countries since 2009.

The calligraphy of Hsing Yun, who founded the Fo Guang Shan Monastery, one of Taiwan's largest Buddhist institutions, will remain on display at the monastery's Seoul branch until April 30.

Visitors to the «one-stroke calligraphy exhibition» do not simply look at the characters, but actually feel the «heart» of the master, Hsing Yun was quoted as saying by Master I En, the abbess of the Seoul branch, at an opening ceremony for the exhibition.

«One stroke» means that each piece of work is completed in one single stroke without any stopping, she said, adding that they convey the master's love for all living creatures on Earth.

Benjamin Liang, head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in South Korea, local Buddhist leaders and Taiwanese expatriates also attended the event, which opened to the sound of sutras being chanted.

The exhibition will move to the South Korean city of Busan and to Jeju Province between May and July 24.

Over the last three years, the exhibition has toured countries that include Singapore, Malaysia, China, Australia, and Europe, and has been well received, the organizers said.
