International by now, a calligraphy contest is currently held in the manor of an academist artist Smirnov in Stavropol. This cultural event that will run until late April, is focused around the topic of fundamental truths.
Take a true quill and dip it into an old inkpot – a true romanticism unveils within the walls of Smirnov's museum manor. According to Svetlana Sachuk, the manor supervisor, contestants have to write fundamental truths, such as “Honour your parents to live forever and ever,” “A good deed lives on for two centuries,” or “First impressions are more lasting” in calligraphy handwriting on a special contest template form.
“The topic came up spontaneously when we saw the student copybooks with texts Smirnov used to dictate to beginner calligraphers. “Geese with geese, and women with women,” “A mother’s prayer can lift one from the sea bottom…” These truths are literally fundamental for they are the very sacred and great truths that were recorded, rewritten, digested, remembered for good to use as guidance in life.”
Anyone in any age can try their hand in calligraphy. A jury of trainers and artists will assess the artworks within respective categories. Is it the effort or the character that defines your writing? There’s no decisive answer. “Family background plays a no small part,” calligrapher Ekaterina Li assures.
“Of course, your handwriting reveals your character, all of the inner doubts and fears, or the opposite, the inner peace – all of the above are reflected literally in the neural impulses that manifest through a pen or a brush on paper. Small or large, clear or illegible hand, the handwriting speed – all of it refers to the mindset, to the categories of thinking, and the emotional needs.”
Hundreds of Stavropol residents have already joined the penmanship project, including the regional Minister of Culture Tatyana Likhacheva with her granddaughter. Last year, the contest turned international with submissions from Germany or Greece.
The results will be summarized next spring on the eve of the Slavonic Culture and Writing Day.
