The Georgian National Centre of Manuscripts operated under the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia announced the Georgian Calligraphy contest on Tuesday.

The competition which is held in Georgia for the fifth time welcomes schoolchildren, teachers, students and everyone interested to take part in it.

«This is a very important contest made to assist the promotion of literature, as well as to reveal the contestants’ artistic opportunities,» Lia Gigauri, Deputy Minister of Education said.

The purpose of the project is to regenerate the culture of manuscript book production in Georgia; to promote important Georgian cultural heritage which is Georgian literature and calligraphy.

The history of Georgian Calligraphy counts as a century long tradition. The handwritten book made in ancient times became a cultural and national phenomenon.

Georgian books have been intensively created for centuries in Georgia and outside, in other Georgian centers of education. Manuscripts were made in monasteries by local creative teams of scribes. They showed a special considerate attitude to graphical inscription of the Georgian alphabet and decorative elements those books were decorated with.
