Bringing People Together Through the Art of Calligraphy

The Sini style of calligraphy which is Islamic Khat, which is Islamic line, design, or construction, mixed with Chinese symbols, and is a rare art form practiced by only a talented few in the world today. One of the few practitioners of this art made an appearance at the New Horizon School recently. Haji Noor Deen, who brought with him this practice to share with the kids on September 20, is one of the world’s best at making this type of art.

The world renowned calligrapher/artist, according to Fatima Cash, Development Director of New Horizon School, “…has his calligraphy hanging in the British Museum, and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco. He’s also in the National Museum of Scotland and he has a piece at Harvard University. So he has studied for over 17 years to reach what they call ‘Ijaza’, which is the highest level a calligrapher can reach,” she told Pasadena Now.

The Chinese and Arabic calligraphic traditions are two of the world’s most beautiful manifestations of the written word. When combined, the art piece is a work of unique beauty and a testimony to Noor Dean’s synthesizing mastery.

The Calligrapher’s extraordinary mastery of-the-art, along with his unique ability to deliver his craft to an audience, has earned him lecture and workshop invitations from some of the most renowned and prestigious institutions around the world. He has given lectures on calligraphy at the Islamic College in Zhengzhou, China, and the Zaytuna Institute in California.

Noor Deen is developing his own gallery, which he calls The Chinese House of Islamic Arts and Calligraphy in Henan Province, China.

He is the first Chinese Muslim to be conferred a Certification of Arabic Calligraphy in Egypt and he has also earned a certification by Master Calligrapher Hasan Celebi, who is from the country of Turkey and also a practitioner of this ancient art form.
