Black In White Silence Multicultural Performance

The idea behind the performance is to create a positive environment for cultural interaction. Its ultimate aim is to promote cross-cultural liberatility.

Being common to all cultures, the art of calligraphy was hence chosen to act as an instrument to reach the set goals. During the event, calligraphers from various ethnic groups from Russia and the CIS countries will assemble in a big hall. Dressed all in white and immersed in silence, they will reproduce one and the same text in different languages.

Black In White Silence also serves as a symbol of diversity and Russia’s great cultural heritage. Russia is home to various world cultures. Many take up calligraphy to build discipline and improve their ability to concentrate.

The event will see the representative of at least 10 ethnic groups come together at one place. Every participant will be sitting at a separate table equipped with a set of writing tools used in their culture.

Each of them will be given a piece of paper in one size. During the performance, the calligraphers will be requested to write down a text in a simple but elegant style. In the course of the evening, each can finish up to several pieces of paper, which will later be sewn together to form an album.

The mastermind behind the performance is Brody Neuenschwander, a calligrapher and text artist from Brugge, Belgium. He has had exhibitions in the U.S., Germany, Belgium, Japan. He is also famous for the live-action calligraphy he provided for the films Prospero’s Books and The Pillow Book by Peter Greenaway.
