An exhibition of calligraphy works on display at Xinhua

A solo exhibition of more than 200 calligraphy works by Professor Pei-kai Cheng is on display at the Xinhua Center of the Shanghai Xinhua Distribution Group until November 20. Featuring classic Chinese texts that include Tang poems, Song lyrics and Yuan songs, Cheng’s works reveal a refined and gentle style and carry a simple message — «culture is seen in people’s writing.»

Having practiced calligraphy for 60 years, Cheng said he was always obsessed with the changes in the strokes and different combination in Chinese characters. To copy the classic texts is not only a good way to understand the text better, but also a personal way to communicate with the original author who created those beautiful lines hundreds and thousands of years ago.

Besides calligraphy, visitors will also get to see 170 books on Chinese culture and history written by Cheng in the last 50 years.

An English major from Taiwan University, Cheng went to the United States to study Chinese history and philosophy. In 1998, he set up the Chinese Civilization Centre at the City University of Hong Kong. As dean of the Chinese center, he helped to bring many overseas professors to work and lecture in China.

A poetry recitation was held at the Hua Space of the Shanghai Xinhua Distribution Group on Thursday night. Some of the top voice artists read out the poems written by Professor Cheng.
