The Sultan Qaboos Award for Culture, Arts and Literature was given to, in the field of calligraphy, Algerian Mohamed Bensaid Cherifi, said Wednesday the Sultan Qaboos Higher Center for Culture and Sciences, cited by the Omani press.
The works of Mohamed Bensaid, a prominent Algerian calligrapher, include the writing of the Holy Quran, the design of Algerian bank notes as well as higher education diplomas and scientific research.
Trained by great Turkish and Egyptian calligraphers, he won several prizes and distinctions in Algeria, Iraq and the United Arab Emirates.
Born in Ghardaia in 1935, Mohamed Bensaid Cherifi studied at El Guerara High School (1956) before obtaining a diploma from the Arab Calligraphy of Cairo in 1962 and working as a calligraphy teacher at the Fine Arts Higher Institute (Algiers).
408 candidates participated in the competition, including 83 for Arab calligraphy, 119 for Arab literature and 206 for kids' literature.
The Sultan Qaboos award aims at promoting Arab culture, arts and literature.
