A Teen Art Festival is held in Johor Baru to celebrate Chinese New Year

Organised in collaboration with Iskandar Malaysia Youth Council and Johor State Tourism Department, the festival will kick off on February 12 with a calligraphy exhibition at White Box.

The exhibition, open from 10am to 6pm daily until February 29, features art by members of the Malaysian Modern Chinese Calligraphy Association. Art schools in Johor Baru were also invited to participate by decorating the central concourse in the theme of the Year of the Monkey.

“The collaboration between experienced calligraphy artists and budding artists from art schools is a unique art showcase that proves Chinese culture and art are being passed down from generation to generation,” said Eh He art director and team adviser Yap Leong.

As an example of how that was accomplished, Yap held up Malaysian Modern Chinese Calligraphy Association chairman Cheng Khing Yin and his 18-year old son, Cheng Dian, who had worked together to create an art piece for display at the exhibition.

The festival will be officially opened on February 13. From 10am to 6pm, visitors can enjoy a range of art by local artists in the Art Bazaar, and street art performances. Students from several art schools will also demonstrate how to make monkey themed handicraft.

At 8pm the same day, a variety show "Reborn Auspicious Music Night", a wushu performance and more will be staged in Black Box.

Young talents are invited to join the Children’s Music Concert from 9.30am on February 19 and 20, while those keen on drawing and painting may join the Children’s Art Competition held at the same time on February 20.

The line-up in the Auspicious Music Show on February 20, includes young musicians from local music schools.
