Beaches might be a place to relax for most people, but for Andrew van der Merwe, they are a blank canvas. The professional calligrapher has been beautifying beaches in and around Cape Town, South Africa, for over a decade.
He also conducts calligraphy workshops for young people from at-risk communities.
"The students who are participating in this particular workshop live by the sea, they live in a fishing community, so they have a relationship with the ocean. And I think connecting with artists who are doing different things helps them to see what opportunities can be out there for them." - Firdous Hendricks, Coordinator, Lalela NGO
The temporary nature of his art doesn’t bother Van der Merwe. He believes it gives a clean slate to start over and do better. He plans to conduct calligraphy workshops in the USA in 2019.
