One of the streets of Veliky Novgorod might in the nearest future avail itself of a monument to the letter A; the draft thereof submitted for Yuri Bobryshev’s (Mayor of Veliky Novgorod) consideration. Vadim Borovykh, the author of the model, is a famous Novgorod artisan who took part in carving the relief plate for the City of Military Glory stele.
The concept of the monument was announced by Mr. Bobryshev three years ago at the International Exhibition of Calligraphy. According to its organizers, the venue had not been selected at random, for the Novgorod Region was the birthplace of the first handwritten book, the cradle of the Russian alphabet, which, by the way, starts with an A. Therefore, it was decided to dedicate the monument to this very letter.
The twelve-foot monument will feature a stele with an open book and a giant A on top of it. The letter is to be decorated with an ancient ornament. However, the author refused to reveal the planned location of his brainchild saying he was not authorized to disclose any suchlike information for it was still at the design stage.
Calligraphy is the art of deliberate hieroglyphic corruption and transformation in order to reach natural harmony.
