A Master-class On Japanese Calligraphy For The Residents of SakhalinA Master-class On Japanese Calligraphy For The Residents of Sakhalin

A master-class on Japanese calligraphy was held on the premises of the Sakhalin Regional Universal Scientific Library in collaboration with the Consulate General of Japan in the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on September 12th.

The master-class attracted some twenty participants, including students of secondary school #9, representatives from Japan and also people interested in Japanese culture.

During the master-class two masters of calligraphy Ai Muto and Oleg Nikulin shared with children and adults on the basis of Japanese calligraphy and also taught the participants how to draw a character meaning «Eternity», which is the first thing to learn in calligraphy in both Japan and China.

According to Oleg Nikulin, this hieroglyph includes eight principal features that form the basis of calligraphy.

«There is a tradition in Japan called „Kakizone“ which is „first writing of the year“ and we usually follow it and hold it on January 1st. According to tradition we draw the wish we want to accomplish in the new year. Unfortunately, now in Japan adults do not follow this tradition, but all children in Japan do, because it is a huge homework assignment for them; so we would like to share this tradition with schoolchildren of Sakhalin», said Tori Wataro, the representative of the Consulate General of Japan in the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
