The International Exhibition of Calligraphy in Veliky Novgorod will gather 40 countries and 350 museums

“The 3rd International Exhibition of Calligraphy to be held in Veliky Novgorod from September 10–12 will become a milestone in the city’s development as a tourist center,” Isaac Freidman, Head of the Regional Committee for Tourism and Foreign Relations told Interfax North-West at the press conference on Tuesday.

“Despite the fact that we have managed to prevent a tourist influx decrease at the beginning of the year, we are interested in the upcoming exhibition’s events to be visited by as many as possible,” he said.

Olga Popova, Deputy Head of the City Administration also noted the importance of the exhibition to be held at the birthplace of Russian writing. She said forty countries and three hundred and fifty museums are to attend the event.

Denis Tsukanov, the press secretary of the International Exhibition of Calligraphy project stressed the considerable growth of interest in calligraphy since the first such exhibition was held in St. Petersburg in 2008 with seventeen thousand people attending, “We are actively cooperating with UNESCO and have already decided on the next International Exhibitions of Calligraphy to hit Paris, New York, Jerusalem, Tokyo, and Shanghai.”

Pyotr Chobitko, President of the National Union of Calligraphers said that the works of masters and apprentice calligraphers in Veliky Novgorod would be accompanied with unique masterpieces such as a Golden Koran, the Sacred Mantra, as well as with a World Famous Mezuzah, a sacred scroll of parchment.

He also added that numerous master classes on various types of calligraphy would be held during the exhibition.

Moreover, the Museum Night, the World Cuisines festivals, and a wakeboarding tournament will be launched in Veliky Novgorod.
