The 5th International Exhibition of Calligraphy opens in the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy on 14th March. The anniversary event will be supported by masters from 52 countries, according to Sokolniki park’s press service.

‘The masters will show a total of 189 works. This time, ‘Contemplation of the Motherland’ will be the unifying theme. The most interesting part of the project is that the majority of the masters will be showing their works in Russia for the first time,’ the report says.

According to the report, among the works there is the: ‘First Translation’ by calligrapher Andrey Drachenkov that represents the Glagolic writing of John’s Gospel scratched in wax as well as works by An Vanhentenrijk who ‘combines calligraphy with three-dimensional paper forms’. During the opening ceremony , there will be a presentation of the calligraphic book St Mark’s Gospel by Apollinariya Mishina who devoted 4 years to its creation. The work contains 155 pages of illustrations as well as 104 coloured eau-forte miniatures illuminated with leaf gold.

The first International Exhibition of Calligraphy opened in 2009 under the auspices of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO and sponsored by the Ministry of Culture. The official opening will take place on 14th March at 12.30 PM. The exhibition ends on 12th April.
