A World Famous Mezuzah was presented to Muscovites

The 1st anniversary since the foundation of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy, Russia’s 1st museum dedicated to the art of handwriting, took place in pavilion 7 of Sokolniki ECC.

The exposition of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy features exquisite samples of Slavic and European writing, strict forms of classical Japanese and traditional Chinese writing, and subtle inscriptions of Jewish and Arab calligraphy.

Alexey Shaburov, Director of the Contemporary Museum of Calligraphy introduced the guests of honour: Andrei Busygin, Deputy Minister of Culture of the Russian Federation, Grigory Ordjonikidze, Secretary of the UNESCO Commission of the Russian Federation, and representatives of religious denomination with Aharon Gurevich, head of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia Military Department among them.

The presentation of the World Famous Mezuzah, the only chef d’oeuvre of sacred Hebrew calligraphy, the only work of contemporary calligraphy listed in the Guinness Book of Records, the largest Mezuzah ever written, executed by an outstanding Israeli calligrapher Avraham Borshevsky was the brightest part of the event..

Aharon Gurevich, Chief Rabbi of Russia presented the World Famous Mezuzah to the Russian audience and remarked that the manuscript inscribed with excerpts from Torah is not only an artwork but also is a sacred item for Jewish people.
Those who keep within the commandments, affix the scroll to the right side of the doorframe of their homes.

“At the moment we do not have an appropriate doorframe to affix this Mezuzah,” the Rabbi joked. He admitted that the presentation of the World Famous Mezuzah in Moscow is a significant event for the Jewish Communities of Russia.

Samples of Arab calligraphy were showcased to the guests as well. The Chinese master amazed the audience with calligraphy artwork executed on a one-and-a-half meter parchment.

The heartfelt violin music performed by Gelios string quartet enclosed the official part of the anniversary.
