Edition structure - library, interesting facts

Almost all books have the same structure.

As a rule the book consists of:

  1. Wrapper
  2. Book cover
  3. Hard cover/ soft cover
  4. Flyleaf
  5. Shelf back
  6. Title leaf (author, title, icon)
  7. Publisher’s imprint (in Russian editions) and inpressum (in foreign editions)
  8. Guide
  9. Book note (brief description)
  10. Review (not obligatory)
  11. Introduction
  12. Text (inner book)
  13. Glossary (subject-heading)
  14. Table of contents (can be placed at the beginning).

Book Classification

Indexes ISBN, BBC, UDC together with an author’s sign are bibliographical indexes and enters the publisher’s package. Indexes are necessary for registration and identification of edition in catalogues of libraries, book shops, state agency exercising regulatory oversight. Let us view it in detail:

  • ISBN: International Standard Book Number. International standard book number, necessary for spreading an edition in commercial networks and for automation of work with it.
  • BBC: bibliothecal-bibliographical classification. Work tables for organization of library funds, thematic catalogues and cards.
  • UDC: universal decimal classification. Information classification system internationally used for science work systematization, works of literature and art, documents and card organization. The main principle is that the tables, which contain all data, are made up on the hierarchical principle of division from the general to the special with usage of the digital decimal code.
