Chinese calligraphy on rice

You'll need a microscope to really appreciate the big talent of Chen Jinyuan. The 82-year-old man from northwest China’s Gansu Province can fit up to 204 Chinese characters on a teeny tiny grain of rice.

The self-taught artist found his interest in microscopic carvings over 62 years ago. He began with carving on pens and ink brushes, but later spiced things up by turning to rice. While others can only carve several characters on a grain of rice, Chen can squeeze in hundreds more. When asked about his secret of success, Chen said, "There is no shortcut but hard work and diligence year after year."

According to Chen, making a successful carved artwork requires a long process, including selecting the grain, arranging the layout, microscopic carving, coloring, sterilizing, and treating the grain with antiseptics. His miniature artworks include carving many pieces of Chinese literature, including the Three Character Classic and the Book of Family Names.

Chen said he plans to apply for a Guinness World Record in microscopic carving on rice. He also hopes to stage his skill on a variety show called "Impossible Challenge" aired on China's national broadcaster CCTV.

Microscopic carving on rice is a traditional Chinese art which can be traced back to the Qing Dynasty. It originated as a tool for cheating in the ancient civil service examinations.
