Typomania Festival, the International type, typography, calligraphy and video feast kicked off in Moscow.
This festival attracts those who take type not only as a symbol used to transmit thoughts on paper from one human to another. A graphic designer takes it as an expressive means that contains tons of features: tracing method, readability, visibility and size. The type can be monumental, folk, decorative, elegant and strict. There are several measurement systems in the art of types. All in all, the artists gathered in Moscow had many topics to discuss and share.
Young calligrapher Arseny can create an exclusive type in just a few minutes, right in front of the public. He likes experimenting with geometric shapes and colours. The young man has been making for some years already large-scale type compositions in the streets of such Russian cities as Tomsk, Vyksa and Novosibirsk.
«In Ekaterinburg, I covered an arch with types and tags, what hid all the protruding elements’ Arseny Pokras says ‘Then it is like when a facility is properly decorated, it is no more a subject to vandalism.»
The style of the festival’s guest, Loyosh Moyor, combines photography and typography. He makes letters ‘alive’ shooting them together with people in his works.
«People bring dynamics of life to letters. So it looks like the type is in motion. This way I am exploring the world of letters,» Loyosh Moyor explains.
This is a typographical video, a hybrid of movie and design. It is a synthetic genre that has great potential: movies, television and electronic books are all in need of high-quality animation for types. Authors from around the world send their works and the judges panel consisted of illustrators, designers, type designers and critics have chosen the best nine of them.
«People can be divided into two kinds, enjoying a limited number of types and taking types as building materials’ festival organizer Alexander Vasin said ‘There are type designers, who do designs of new type’s shapes.»
Artists say that creating images the type in motion helps to get ideas across to the audience in a faster way.
«There was one smart man, a scientist, who said that a few seconds of graphics, he called it cognitive, are able to replace several pages of usual text,» a member of the judges panel Pavell Boreyko says.
Types’ animation in Russia keeps on attracting more and more young designers. Modern pace of life drives even letters. Just do not forget to put a sense into them.
