South Shields Museum & Art Gallery welcomes the Signs for Sounds: Cutting Edge Calligraphy exhibition to the museum with a special performance from artist Tim Donaldson on Saturday 20 July.
Whether you are passionate about writing letters with a traditional fountain pen, playing with new technology or just learning to do joined-up writing for the first time, this exhibition has something for everybody young and old.
The exhibition explores letterform and calligraphy, from traditional quill pens and stone cutting, to tattoos and cutting-edge technology.
Tim Donaldson, whose artwork features in the exhibition, will be doing a special live performance at the museum on the opening day of the exhibition. Tim will be creating his piece, inspired by The Lindisfarne Gospels, directly onto the walls of the gallery.
Tim is famous for creating the world’s largest humburgefonts with a two foot wide brush. He has also produced texts which cannot be read, these will also be on display in the exhibition.
The exhibition also features the works of Julien Breton, who has made light calligraphy especially for Sights for Sounds. Julien’s work spans traditional calligraphic techniques, photography and choreography.
