Members of the Calligraphy Society of Sun City love to write, and they especially love to write «love cards.»
«I love making love cards, and I love the people here at the club,» said Cheryl Curtis, a club member Recently, 300 of the love cards were distributed at local nursing homes.
The club teaches members how to write in numerous «hands,» some dating back to the fourth century, including Unical, Gothic, Italic, Pointed Pen and Legende. «There’s endless calligraphy hands. What you would call a font we’d call a hand,» said Trudy Bryson, president of the society.
Curtis said the club helped her learn a number of hands. «I love all the supplies we have. They give us these guidelines, too, so it helps us fit the hands on different envelope sizes,» she said.
For Curtis and many others in the club, it’s not just about using the different hands, it’s more about sharing something made with love with another person. The Calligraphy Society specializes in all types of greeting cards with many personal touches. The cards vary in price from $2-$5.
The club meets on the first Friday of each month through May from 9-11 a.m. in the Sundial Recreation Center. The club is open all other Thursday and Fridays at the same time for other sessions and workshops.
