Russian Calligraphy Contest in Vladivostok

Vladivostok has seen the award ceremony of a Russian calligraphy contest, organized by the Maritime State University named after admiral G.I.Nevelskoi, International Education Institution, Chair of Russian Philology.

The organizers — professors of Russian philology — concerned about the young generation losing fine handwriting skills, wanted to draw the students' attention to the absolute necessity of regular, intelligible, neat handwriting; to show this art is not beyond human reach but a simple practice requiring a certain degree of diligence. However, it was a contest all the same; its goal being to chose the best hand. Another goal was to impregnate young people with the idea of the role of Russian writing tradition as an integral part of Russian culture, for too often is the notion of calligraphy associated with the art of Chinese or Japanese writing.
